Originally entitled 'Breaking Wind' in English but thankfully revised, Hong Kong director Dante Lam's new movie featuring a whole lot of cycling, To The Fore is to be released August 6th.
Taiwanese bike manufacturer Merida sponsored the movie, supplying some 300 bikes for the supporting cast, and its actors, though not cyclists before they landed spots in the film, rode some 100,000km over the during the shooting of the film - according to the marketing bumpf. Whilst that seems quite a lot, maybe they miltiplied the distance by 300 riders.
"To portray professional cyclists," wrote Nancy Z on DramaFever.com, "the actors underwent intensive training prior to filming. The movie took 6 months to film, with shooting taking place across multiple countries, and the actors cycled over 100,000 km for the movie. (That's over 62,000 miles!) Another challenge for them was the director's demand for the actors to shave their legs. Shawn Dou sheepishly admitted that he didn't know he was supposed to shave and kept the production team waiting while he shaved. He complimented Siwon's pretty legs, and Siwon made everyone laugh when he said, "My legs got so smooth that they didn't seem to belong to a man. I felt apologetic to my mom.""
Because your Ma has hairy legs, Shawn? Never apologise for your beautiful man-biker legs amigo. Let those puppies shine.
The film actually looks quite entertaining, mainly because it, er, has bikes in it, but the real test of whether it stands up to scrutiny will be whether it features institutionalised doping on a major scale or at the very least a Lance-type bogey man. Ahem. I will be going to see it and I'm not even bothered if there are no English subtitles! Watch this space for the review.
I've looked to see if it will be released outside Asia but have found nothing yet, if anyone knows, please post the info in the comments section.
